Canva integration guide
The "Able Software" integration for the Canva Connect APIs
Works with CanvaWhat it does
The Able Platform gives your team an AI assistant that works with the tools you already use. Connecting Canva lets the assistant work with your own Canva designs — it can list and read your designs, export them, create new designs for you, upload images to your library and browse your folders, so it can pull a design into a report, hand you a file, or start one from your Able data.
The integration reads only the data of the person who connected it. Its writing is limited to two things done on your behalf: creating designs and uploading assets to your Canva Uploads. It asks for no permission to comment, to publish brand templates, to change folder permissions, or to receive webhooks. Nothing it reads is ever sold, shared with third parties or used to train AI models.
Requirements
- An account on an Able Platform application (your organization's Able workspace).
- A Canva account. Every core feature works on a free Canva plan; a few features need a paid Canva plan or Canva Enterprise — see Which Canva plan you need below.
Connect Canva
A Canva connection is personal: it connects your own Canva account, and it appears listed under its Canva display name when it is working. There are no keys to paste and nothing to configure.
From your account settings
- Sign in to your Able application. Click your avatar in the top-right corner and choose Account Settings, then open Connections in the left rail (the direct address is
/account/connectionson your application's host). - Click Connect an account, choose Canva and continue.
- Canva opens its own permission screen listing the access below. Review it and click Allow.
- You return to the Connections page with your Canva account listed as Working, under its Canva display name.
From the admin console
- An administrator can connect a Canva account for the whole application from Admin → Connections (the direct address is
/admin/connectionson your application's host): choose Canva and click Connect, review Canva's permission screen and click Allow. That connection is then available to the application's assistants.
What Able reads and writes
The connection requests nine explicit scopes. Canva keeps reading and writing separate, so each is listed on its own — a write scope never grants its matching read:
- Profile
- your Canva profile name and basic account information, to label the connection.
- Design metadata
- the list of your designs and their details — title, type and thumbnail.
- Design content
- the contents of your designs, so the assistant can read and export them.
- Create designs
- create new designs in your account on your behalf.
- Asset metadata
- the images, audio and video already in your Canva Uploads.
- Upload assets
- upload images and files to your Uploads (and update or remove ones it uploaded).
- Folders
- browse your folders and your Projects, to find and organize designs.
- Brand template metadata
- the list of your brand templates — available on Canva Pro, Teams or Enterprise.
- Brand template content
- read and fill your brand templates — reading needs Pro, Teams or Enterprise; filling from your Able data (autofill) needs Canva Enterprise.
The scopes are minimal and explicit. The integration requests no comment, folder-permission, brand-template-publishing or webhook scope; the only writing it does is creating designs and uploading assets, on your behalf.
Which Canva plan you need
- Any plan, including Canva Free
- list, read and export your designs; create designs; import files; upload assets; browse your folders.
- Canva Pro or Teams
- your brand templates appear and can be read; exporting a PNG with a transparent background and resizing a design become available.
- Canva Enterprise
- filling brand templates with your Able data (autofill). On any other plan the assistant can read a brand template but cannot autofill it.
The assistant checks what your Canva plan allows before it tries a plan-gated feature, so it never fails silently — if something needs a plan you do not have, it tells you plainly.
Use it
Open the assistant with the AbleClaw button in the top bar (or the chat icon in the left rail) and ask in plain language, for example "list my Canva designs", "export my latest design as a PNG", "upload this image to my Canva uploads" or "create a Canva design from this". Larger exports are prepared on request, so they may take a moment to come back.
Edit in Canva, and return
When the assistant shows you one of your designs, it offers an Edit in Canva action. It opens that design in the Canva editor, where you make your changes. When you are done, click Canva's Return button and you land straight back in Able, with the updated design ready to export or use.
Remove it
- In the Able Platform: avatar (top right) → Account Settings → Connections, open the Canva connection and choose Turn off or remove it. The stored access is deleted, so Able cannot read anything further.
- In Canva: open Settings → Connected apps, find "Able Software" and remove it. This revokes Able's access on Canva's side.
Either side ends the connection. A data-deletion request is honoured within 30 days.
Data handling
Able keeps only an encrypted refresh token for the connection; short-lived access tokens are never stored. Your Canva data is read or written only to perform the task you asked for, and is never sold, shared with third parties or used to train AI models; it is encrypted in transit and at rest. When you turn the connection off in Able, the stored access is deleted so Able can no longer reach your Canva; removing "Able Software" in Canva (Settings → Connected apps) revokes it on Canva's side as well. Details are in our Privacy Policy; deletion requests go to privacy@ablesoftware.io.
